About Public Transportation

Our mission is to provide safe and efficient public transportation that serves Anchorage residents and visitors.
Sanctioned by local voters in 1973, Anchorage's Public Transportation People Mover bus system began operation on July 1, 1974, carrying 39,505 passengers in the first month of service. In 2007 People Mover served 3,989,137 trips with an average weekday ridership of 13,564.
People Mover maintains a fleet of 55 modern, comfortable, fully accessible and clean buses that travel more than two million miles a year. Friendly, courteous and professional bus operators serve the greater Anchorage area with 16 regular transit routes.
Paratransit service is provided through AnchorRIDES, a coordinated transportation system for people with disabilities that prevent them from using fixed route; seniors age 60 and over with limited trip purpose, Medicaid Choice Waiver and other contracts and funding sources.
The Share-A-Ride program coordinates 45 commuter Vanpools in Anchorage, Mat-Su and Girdwood. In addition, Share-A-Ride offers free, on-line carpool matching service.
The department offers a number of transportation programs to improve mobility and access to our community including free Travel Training to groups and individuals on how to ride the bus and Books on Buses which provides age-appropriate reading materials on each bus.
