Street Lights

Maintenance of street lights is divided between MOA Street Light Maintenance and three electric utility service areas: Chugach Electric, Municipal Light & Power, and Matanuska Electric. If the street lights are controlled by a meter, they are normally maintained by MOA Street Light Maintenance (approximately 7,000 lights). If they are fed directly from a utility transformer, they are normally maintained by that utility. Chugach Electric has approximately 4,500; Municipal Light & Power has some 3,500; and Matanuska Electric has 30. Usually, the unit responsible for maintenance can be determined by the type of pole the light is mounted on. Wooden poles are usually maintained by the utility; metal poles are usually maintained by MOA Street Light Maintenance.
MOA Street Light Maintenance pays the light bills for some 15,000 street lights located throughout the municipality, from Eklutna in the north to Girdwood in the south. In addition and conjunction with street light maintenance, this section of Street Maintenance also maintains approximately 240 miles of underground cable, 16 storm drain lift stations, 156 thaw wire systems, and about 900 load centers.
